Silicone Cookware And Bakeware
Once upon a time, there was silicon rubber for the boots on spark plugs. It was a great insulator from heat and took a wide range of abuse from the engine. Several years later, innovators wondered, “If it’s so great in engines, wouldn’t it give the same impressive results in bake ware?” So it was with much research and ingenuity that the first set of brightly-colored silicon cookware was born.
As the name implies, silicon cookware is made with silica. It is heat resistant and very flexible. Silicon bake ware is very new on the market. It first started showing up on infomercials before making its way into more mainstream stores and supermarkets. The appeal is that it’s very flexible, has even cooking and is completely non-stick. Even if the chef forgets to use a non-stick spray, food does not stick to the silicon bake ware. This is a huge appeal for any chef. Nothing sticks and even if it does, the pan is so flexible that it can turn right side out to remove the offending piece of food.
One of the concerns regarding silicon bake ware is whether or not it retains its shape. Its flexibility is a marketing plus, but some worry that bundt pans cannot retain their rigidity when filled with heavy batter. Having to clean up a major spill in a hot oven is not a good time. Surprisingly, the silicon pan stays upright with no spillage — even holding something as heavy as cake batter. The cake browns evenly on all sides and is moist in the middle. Once again, clean up is a snap, even without the use of grease or non-stick cooking spray.
The one thing the silicon bake ware cannot do is make anyone a world class chef. The commercials and advertisements make it seem this way; but it just means that whatever concoction is baked, slides right out. It can still taste terrible, but at least the bake ware remains durable. The bright colors of the silicon bake ware are also very appealing and make searching for a pan in a dark cabinet very easy. Most silicon bake ware sets come with hot mats and utensils, which are added bonuses. Regardless of how your first silicon bake ware set comes, the advantages over traditional pans are tremendous. Easy to use, non-stick and flexible are some of the great selling points when considering silicon.
